St Stephen’s
Church, Redditch town centre
For
‘The
New Life on the Green Project’ (the Church’s
PCC working with other town centre churches and the local authority)
Fresh
Life Consulting was appointed in 2008 to carry out a feasibility study
looking at re-use options for this town centre church.
Following detailed consultation and feasibility study work a preferred
option was agreed by the congregation that involves inserting a new
first floor across the western end of the church and in both aisles.
This option subsequently won the support of a range of stakeholders
including the local authority.
FLC
has now been appointed to project manage this exciting scheme with a
view to securing the funds to implement the proposals for the benefit of
all the town.

The church offers considerable scope for adaptive re-use.

Key lessons demonstrated by this project:
-
The degree to which a project of this kind can energise a
congregation and draw them in to the wider community
-
The
value of selecting the design team carefully, over a period of 6-8
weeks
-
The amount of support and goodwill that exists ‘out there’ when a
congregation is seen to be approaching their challenges
professionally, with ambition and by setting themselves high
standards
