The Archway of Tears, Birmingham
Fresh
Life Consulting has been appointed by Birmingham Conservation Trust to
work with the team led by Rodney Melville and Partners to carry out a
feasibility study of this Victorian Gateway building, with the objective
of finding a viable future for of all that remains of this major
Birmingham Workhouse. It now forms part of the Dudley Road Hospital site
which in 2016 will be largely vacated by the NHS and be sold for
redevelopment. Securing an appropriate, economic re-use for the building
is therefore that more urgent if the building is to restored and the
area’s important memories and social history preserved for future
generations.
FLC is providing re-use potential,
economic and development appraisal advice to the team.
Birmingham
Conservation Trust is a charity created ‘to preserve and enhance
Birmingham’s threatened architectural heritage.
Their projects secure the long-term future of buildings at risk,
especially those ignored by developers, larger charities and public
bodies. They combine sensitive repairs with imaginative new uses for the
buildings. Working in partnership with others, the Trust creates
attractive places to live, work and play. To read more about BCT follow
